Sydney Morning Herald:

The Cyprus parliament has taken the unusual step of rebuking United Nations envoy Alexander Downer over perceived bias it says is hindering long-running reunification talks.

MPs unanimously approved a resolution late Thursday decrying Downer's "one-sided and detrimental statements and actions" that they say have eroded his credibility as an impartial facilitator in the talks.

The former Australian foreign minister said last month that a peace accord needed to be reached before "Greek Cypriots" take over the European Union's rotating presidency in July.

Well done!

The Cypriot Parliament should be congratulated for this because in recent years the U.N's position has been perplexing to say the least. They have been far too lenient on Turkey, as have many of the Western world's leading powers (with the exception of Sarkozy's France). Having said that, I think successive Cypriot governments have been poor at converying the facts of their decisions to the world. Rejecting the Annan Plan was necessary and vital because of its many flaws, but those flaws and the reasons for rejecting the plan haven't been conveyed to the world (outside of Greece and Cyprus) effectively enough. If people can't understand the real reasons they are bound to misunderstand, and wrongly assume, that Greek Cypriots are content with the status quo.
